Got cultural affirmation? Today's Oakland Tribune contained this straightfaced yet fatuous description of Subaru: "Subaru's standing as the car the rich can drive without attracting attention to themselves and the politically active Birkenstock set can drive while drawing cultural affirmation, will not be harmed by this newest rendition of the Forester." (No link available.) Huh? I don't get cultural affirmation from driving; driving lets me get from Point A to Point B when no alternative exists. (Full disclosure: Our family owns a Forester.)
